Yeah no shit. Went to a fair last year. $20 to play some of the games. Fuck that

u/macmac360 6d ago
then you gotta carry that damn thing around the fair all day

u/skrutape 6d ago
doing these games on the way out is key

They give out more large prizes earlier in the day to create more interest in playing from seeing people walk around with big prizes all day.

They are, but once you spend enough money, they'll give you the toy (or temporarily un-rig it so you win).
It's like a purchase at an extortive price, but with extra steps.

When I was a kid I won a goldfish at the fairground, presented to me in a plastic bag of water, and after 20 seconds of joy it became “wait, what the heck am I going to do with this? I’ve got to carry it round all night and then have nowhere to put it when I get home”, so just gave it back to the guy running the game.
25
u/Anniesoptera 6d ago
I failed at the game with the goldfish as a prize at when I was a kid, but the guy running the game gave me a goldfish anyway. (I assume because it was closing time and nobody wants to take care of a bazillion individually bagged goldfish after hours.) Fuckin thing lived for 6 years, and I never even wanted it - or earned it - in the first place.

Did that once. It was one of those "you shouldn't win" type games that me and all my buddies did just do see who could do better for bragging rights, I ended up winning from shear dumb luck. Ended up with a 14ft long 1ft wide "snake"....at 11am at 6 flags.
I carried that fucker around for the next 6+ hours, stashing him in stupid places when I went on a ride. Now he sits on top of a bookcase, coiled up, over a decade later just cause its a fun little memory and i freaking earned him for that hassle.

One of my parents best friends ran the local fairs in my area. He'd let me play for free for hours, knowing I just wanted to play, not win any of the toys. I think he liked having a kid in one of the seats enticing others to play anyways.
Fast forward 15 years and my wife and I are at a 6 flags. I saw the games from my youth and realized they were no where near as rigged as the local fair games. So we played, and I won a lot. We had 2 large bags full of toys after a few hours. Sure enough we realized that we'd have fun explaining at the border that we won all these toys when travelling back to Canada. My wife then noticed a kid crying as their parents are leaving the park, the kid literally pointed at the bag over my shoulder full of toys, so I walked over to the father and offered him a toy out of our collection. It was the first time I had ever had someone suspicious of me lol. The dad wanted to know the catch, why I was giving them away, etc etc. Wife was off to the side giving me the most suspicious look I've ever received. So I quickly explain that we were down from Canada... and that's all he needed to hear. Little guy got a shark that was larger than him and I will always remember the look of excitement on his face.
Gave away a couple dozen toys that afternoon. Basically had a queue of kids, and some parents, lined up asking for toys. Felt like Santa, it was fun.

u/ExistingCommission63 6d ago
And really, do you actually have room in your home for something that big?
83
u/ImportanceCertain414 6d ago
I remember one summer at 6 Flags when I won seven huge stuffed animals, made money selling the extras I didn't have room for in my car. Was able to make back what I paid for my season pass.
It was the game where you had to shoot a stack of 6 cups and knock them all off the table. You could use the entire length of chain attached to the gun to shoot from. I could reach the tip of the barrel to roughly 5 inches from the stack, Hahaha
They had that thing "fixed" next week when we went back. This was like 20 years ago, I still have the giant purple monkey laying around somewhere in my basement storage.

u/hungrydruid 6d ago

Are you just super tall or bendy or something? I'm short af, just can't picture this very well lol.

Funny enough, I score pretty high on the "ape index" which is why I kept the gorilla stuffed animal. :D

I was at an arcade as a kid one time playing one of those push the coin games and the thing broke and spit out a fresh roll of tickets. I got an Aladdins Castle Tshirt and thought I was pretty hot shit

u/Gh0stp3pp3r 6d ago
During college, I did a stint at Six Flags. People were so excited to win the big stuffed animals.... not realizing they're worth so little. And then later we'd see some left in the parking lot areas when they realized all those fluffy bears weren't going to fit in the car with people, luggage, etc. Often one would get strapped to the top of a car.... the bugs and dirt on it by the time they'd get home..... ewwwww.
2
u/Strange_Occasion_408 6d ago
Same. I would have dads try to bribe me to win.
I got pretty good at the game with the rubber frog and hammer. It freaked people out that I could win.

Oh sure, it makes a massive difference. But not for the bugs. The force of the wind will compress the item turning it into a hard enough surface that the bugs will mostly die.

Ended up winning it with points after 15 more dollars

u/KoedKevin 6d ago
I won a giant Bee once. First time on a dollar game. After my kids' initial excitement, it was a massive pain in the ass. Had to lug it around the fair for hours. It barely fit in the back of the minivan and then it just sat in the basement for a couple of years. Some neighbor kid liked it so we gave it to him. His dad called to "thank" me.
70
u/SpinkickFolly 6d ago
Yeah, the giant stuffed animals are kinda a scam. They will give away at random through out the day so other people see that its possible to win them. I won a giant pig off shooting the star game, I DID NOT SHOOT THE STAR OUT.
While fun, the giant pig was just a curse, its going to end up given away or in the trash at some point.

There's exactly 1 fair game I'm weirdly good at. It's supposed to be impossible to win so all the prizes are huge. Every time I've gone to the fair and played it, I won it and paid less than $5.00. And every time I've won a manager comes over to try to argue against me winning. Thankfully the guy running the booth doesn't care about giving away the "impossible to win" prizes and usually vouches for me. The result is multiple giant plush dogs and one massive white tiger in my old childhood bedroom.
11
u/painfulmanet 6d ago
Yo but what's the game?
7
u/Repossessedbatmobile 6d ago edited 6d ago
I don't know what the name of it is, but I can describe it. It's basically a game with several large, shallow bins that are angled horizontally and tilted diagonally. You have to stand about 3 feet back and toss a ball underhanded into them, and it has to stay in the bin. But because the bins are tilted and shallow, the ball usually bounces out. But I was able to figure out where the specific small "sweet spot" (the one tiny spot where if you aim a ball at it, it will not bounce out) is on the bins by sheer chance.
I have pretty good aim with throwing a ball because I spent years tossing them for my dogs to catch. We'd play a game where I'd toss balls, toys, and treats directly into their mouths from a distance. They loved it, especially my senior dogs because they got to be lazy and still have fun. So thanks to muscle memory, I'm able to easily hit that small specific location in the bins from a distance.

like a lot of life’s joys, they are valuable for the moment and the memory. That’s why vacations are rad, you can’t take them with you, but the joy and relaxation feed and recharge your spirit.
A lot of people are focusing on the impracticality of this stuffed animal..it may end up discarded, or may sit in a crawl space until she has a child or someone to give it to. But just because novelty sometimes wears off doesn’t lessen the value of something. And I bet if she keeps it, whenever she comes across it in that crawl space or wherever, she smiles.

I guess I peaked early. At 10 I went to Knott’s Berry Farm and paid $1.00 to throw the rings on a glass soda bottle. My second ring landed and I won a Big Bird that was bigger than me. Only bad thing was carrying it the rest of the day.

i was in 3rd or 4th grade and i won fluffy the unicorn from despicable me
it was probably one of life’s most gratifying moments to win the big stuffed animal

u/justjentennyson2 6d ago
When I was in high school, I won a 3 foot cow at a carnival before going to a concert. So excited I won, but carrying the thing around was exhausting. In college, I ended up winning a 4 foot tall Kermit and 4 foot Miss Piggy at different carnivals.
Big oversized ridiculous stuffed animals are the best and now I feel like I need to unretire from carnival games so I can win one I can sit on!

u/erynhuff 6d ago
My boyfriend bought me one of these for valentines day a few years ago and I discovered it’s much better at supporting my hips during sleep than a body pillow and now i cant sleep without it.. yes it takes up a ton of space in bed (i think mines a bit smaller but same design) but i’ll take it to be able to walk the next morning.

u/Kiwiteepee 6d ago
What makes you think that? Is there more context that you have beyond this video 10 second video?
5
u/ScrapsFralickJr 6d ago edited 6d ago
The fact that she's standing there waiting for the video to start before, "reacting". The worker isnt paying attention when she snatched the animal from him. We can see he reaches for it back before she says something to him and he waves her off to do the thing for the camera. Then stupid and forced laughs when the, "show" is over. I see we found their target audience.

u/Flippedfrog 6d ago
That + no sound, a stall that has no front, and no other toys in sight
→ More replies-3
u/Kiwiteepee 6d ago
Do you think it's possible the person who filmed this condensed it down by editing whatever was at the beginning of the video? Is it possible they did the same to the end of the video? Ya know, since they probably didn't stop recording as she's hopping around.
Also, is it possible you're adding your own conjecture to this nice video because in the beginning she was standing perpendicular to the camera and watching the worker retrieve the stuffed animal?
Are these things possible? Or are you the only one who knows what really happened...?

u/FewReturn2sunlitLand 6d ago
No, clearly it's an abandoned amusement park with no games and they hired an actor to climb a ladder and pretend to hand her the stuffed animal. This is obvious cause there are no other toys in sight (except for the ones you see on the left side of the frame 2 seconds in), the stall has no front (except that we see a side view of the front), and of course we see her wait with a huge smile on her face for the employee to hand her the stuffed animal before rushing forward. Clearly the employee handing it over was the pre-arranged signal for "action."
1
u/ScrapsFralickJr 6d ago
Looks like she may even snatched it from him before he calls her back and she says something before he tells ger to go ahead.

I once won a giant taco by kinda accident. I made a basket on the rigged basketball game where the hoop is oblong instead of circle. I hit the back of the rim which caused the ball to go straight up and back down dead center.
That's the closest I've been to making it into the NBA.

My nanny and her husband won my little sister and I an elephant that size. We loved it. When you are 5 years old, it looks enormous-life size. She was light gray with a big, swooping trunk and so cute. My sister and I kept “Elli” in between our beds and rode her all the time. Whenever one of us farted, we’d blame Elli.

I got really good at this one game at the fair... and now I have so many giant stuffed animals, idk what to do with them. 😅
My dad used to practice and literally win every single one in the booth. To this day they have a "one prize per person per year" at every fair. 😂 But it has the biggest stuffed animals! They are always filled with foam though, so they take up SO. MUCH. ROOM.
I think I'll keep the first I won, and my Pikachu, and sell the other 5...

I did the same a long time ago. Still have it. I had 5 Euro left, and it was the end of the day, so I figured I'd just blow it on a raffle. They spun the wheel and my number ended on the Jackpot, but I'm so used to how scammy these things are, that I still didn't expect to win anything bigger than a keychain. They told me I could pick any of the top prices. Best day ever.
